When Warner Bros purchased the rights to the 1959 musical hit GYPSY it was intended to do a purely dramatic film, with songs from the Jule Styne & Stephen Sondheim Broadway bag confined to the theatrical sequences. Rosalind Russell was chosen for the starring (but non-musical) role of Mama Rose along side Natalie Wood as Gypsy Rose Lee. However unprejudiced as this version of GYPSY began filming, THE MUSIC MAN opened in theatres and scored a gargantuan hit. It was then decided that GYPSY should be filmed as a musical follow-up to THE MUSIC MAN. The production closed down and was revamped as a musical. Rosalind Russell could yell but not in the style her role demanded (all of Mama Rose’s songs in the Broadway production were written in the fresh Mama Rose, Ethel Merman’s vocal style) . It was decided to bring in singer Lisa Kirk to serve Russell with the vocals rather than re-cast the role. The slay result fully justifies this decision because Rosalind Russell’s Mama Rose is simply blooming and the combination of Russell and Kirk in the songs is so perfect you never know (or care) who is doing the singing. No other actress, before or since (which includes such renowned performers as Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bette Midler and Tyne Daly), even comes terminate to conveying the monster in mother’s clothing that was Mama Rose the plot Russell does while tranquil allowing the humanity of the character to emerge now and then only to become subservient once again to her driving ambition.

The Dolby Digital 5:1 Discrete Surround envelopes you into the proceedings and the arresting, richly saturated Technicolor wide hide image (2:35-1) is fully equal to the first-rate audio.

But it is Rosalind Russell in one of the greatest conceal performances ever committed to film that drives this version of GYPSY to the top of the heap and makes this DVD a “must have.”

What a treat it was to re-watch GYPSY after lo these umpteen years. Rosalind Russell’s Rose is a gawk in mountainous force-of-nature type acting. As it happens, hers is the only Rose I’ve ever seen, so I cannot really accept into the who-was-better argument with any dependable authority. But it’s hard to imagine that Merman could have played this archetypical stage monster, uh, mother with more authority on the huge veil. My guess is that those who gain that Russell brings subtlety to the character that Merman could not have are honest. Merman may have been mammoth on stage, where bigger is better (announce, manner, gesture and all out pizzazz), but what works wonderfully on stage may be deadly on mask (and vice versa) .

Roz was the quintessential tough huge on mask. She projected warmth, as well as street smarts though–and that was the order of the day with the hide version of GYPSY. She’s supported by a fabulous cast: Karl Malden, honest grand as always, as her expansive lug/softie of a suitor. And Natalie Wood, fetching as always, as the young, sweet vulnerable Louise.

GYPSY is as pleasurable a musical as you’re going to gather. Shining, touching, sassy. They don’t design ‘em like that anymore. Well, of course, they don’t really compose musicals powerful anymore, but you know what I mean.

I hope I won’t leave Roz Russell fans crushed when I mention one thing, however. For years, I former to tout Russell’s talk-singing as proof that a talented actor with even moderate vocal ability could always learn to do over a song. Now I learn from imdb.com that the vocals (some? all? ) may have been supplied by actress Lisa Kirk. I am shocked–not appalled, but haunted. If those vocals aren’t Roz’s hold, well, it’s objective about a perfect match. The songs are sung in as gritty a negate as Roz uses in delivering the lines. I have no doubt that Russell could have pulled it off herself, and it may have been the case that some suit at the studio chickened out and brought in Lisa.

Well, it could have been worse. At least they didn’t go against type and waddle in Marni Nixon.

PS–Ah yes, it only occurred to me to check a itsy-bitsy further to examine if there was a soundtrack album on CD to peek what the genuine scoop on the Lisa/Roz business was. It’s honest that Lisa was brought in after Roz had already recorded her versions. Since Roz’s outtakes are included on the CD, it’s doubtless enlightening. The reviews (all customer reviews, in this case) are penned by fans in the know, and although no one can agree, they’re well worth taking a contemplate at if you’re at all inviting. Purchasing the CD may well be worth it if you’re very engrossing.

The movie revolves around a border collie puppy born on a spectacularly sparkling sheep ranch approach the ocean in the British Isles. If you have young children and want to do them (and yourself) a gigantic favor, rent or retract this DVD. It is not as glossy as a Disney feature, but has an old-style beauty that simply glows. You will reach to appreciate Mist.

Mist makes the list of my common family movies. Unbiased enough conflict to retain it animated, but no violence, no outrageous language, no cartoon characters, none of the double entendres you don’t want to have to account for to children.

Mist is a sheepdog puppy who grows up in this film and learns the rules of being a top-notch sheepdog. She exemplifies the power of focus, courage, and attention, and gently teaches those lessons. Added to this is a setting that will unexcited your spirit, and photography that shimmers.

Mist gently lifts your spirit. I highly recommend it.

I am dating myself woefully, but I remember seeing this film when it came out in theatres. I trekked some distance (via bus) down to some theatre in Hollywood (I’m from another fraction of L.A.) because it wasn’t showing anywhere nearby. I wanted to peek it *that* unpleasant. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

When I finally got a DVD player, one of the first DVDs I got was “Local Hero”. It’s definitely on my “must-have” list.

The record is simple — materialistic Peter Reigert is sent to a diminutive Scottish village to try to negotiate a land deal for his rich, eccentric boss (Burt Lancaster, who is outstanding) . He arrives in Scotland as a guy who is only obsessed with business deals, his car, and his posessions encourage in Texas, but soon he learns there are more vital things in life. The townsfolk are absolutely fabulous, all in their hold original, eclectic arrangement. Denis Lawson particularly shines as “jack of all trades” who holds several positions in the community, including innkeeper.

The oddness and beauty of this film takes time to unfold, and it is best unbiased to sit benefit and eye it happen. Everyone seems to have a sage, everyone is eccentric in some plot. I especially loved Burt Lancaster and his interaction with his “therapist”, who takes the job *far* too seriously. Lancaster plays one of the most likeable and novel characters onscreen. Reigert too, is endearing. He so wants to be “normal” that he can’t even admit that he might exercise a shampoo for dry or greasy hair. “Normal. EXTRA normal.”, he says, when asked what kind of shampoo he needs. What an uptight guy he seems at first, but he soon mends his ways.

The movie’s dialogue is as unpretentious and understated as it is witty – Glasgow-born director Bill Forsyth was responsible for the script, too, and it shows. But the film’s single most outstanding feature is nature itself; the rugged cliffs, endless and ever-changing skies, windswept, forlorn beaches and stormy sea of Scotland’s northern fly. And the brooding, depressed mood of those beaches, cliffs, misty glens and mountains is perfectly captured by the music unexcited by another son of Scotland, Imprint Knopfler (like Forsyth born in Glasgow), whose very first film rep remains one of his most poignant and best-known to date – there probably isn’t a Knopfler fan out there who doesn’t instantly view the movie’s theme song “Going Home,” even if he has never seen the movie itself. “Local Hero” is Forsyth’s and Knopfler’s declaration of admire to their native land; a humble, evocative appeal for its preservation which merits every bit of attention it has (belatedly) received.

There are some movies that are gloriously unpleasant and “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” (a.k.a. “The Head That Wouldn’t Die”, which is the better title because, after all, we are talking an entire head not honest a brain) is one of the classics in that particular category. You can salvage a believe of this film hosted by Elvira, Mistress of the Shadowy, or skewered by the “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ crew, but you will have no quandary appreciating this example of poor science fiction cinema. Dr. Bill Cortner (Jason call me Herb Evers) is melancholy with the outdated surgery practice by his father, Dr. Cortner (Bruce Brighton), who warns him about higher laws and other nonsense. Bill has a fiancé, Jan Compton (Virginia Leith), who keeps talking about how she cannot wait for them to net married. So when they are in a car accident he rescues Jan’s head and takes it serve to his private laboratory. There his assistant, Kurt (Leslie Daniels), who has a transplanted arm that has not exactly taken from one of Bill’s earlier experiments and who also rails against the doctor’s opinion to come by his fiancé (now the spoiled “Jan in a Pan”) the perfect body. Meanwhile, Jan would rather be tiring, than be a calm head; besides, she has some questions about the soundness of the whole method, which she discusses with Kurt. The rest of the time she carries on a one sided conversation with whatever is on the other side of the bolted door in the basement (Kurt will not let the cat out of the bag, but we know it is dazzling unpleasant and that it is another result of Bill’s insane desire to play god) . In the bloody climax of this film, the spot comes to a head…

Oh, you unbiased cannot have too powerful fun at the expense of this film. Director Joseph Green and producer Rex Carlton came up with the fable, and you have to admit that any movie that combines a talking disembodied head, a monster late a locked door, and exotic dancers is a movie that is going to be made. Green even gets a bit creative with the camera in the car accident sequence. However, the dialogue and the strong sexual subtext are what really stand out for me in this film. It is fabulous that the actors could say some of these lines with straight faces, but it is rather surprising that the sexuality of the film could be so overt. It is very easy to read this film being all about lust: Jan is ready to execute Bill very contented and when he is left with impartial her head he insists on getting what is clearly an even better body so that they can consummate their destiny.

I will go out on a limb…and say that “The Head That Wouldn’t Die” is one of the two worst Science Fiction movies that you have to peruse, along with “Understanding 9 From Outer Status.” Certainly they are the only 5 star ratings I have ever given to “terrible” films because the enjoyment level so completely transcends the inherent value of the film.

I glean “B” movies, especially from the ’50’s that are poorly made in

terms of region and acting. In an ironic draw they become fun to notice because they are so awful which makes them so helpful.

The Criterion Collection brings film lovers some of the most interesting, spellbinding pictures ever made. National borders mean minute to the folks at this DVD company; they will release American films as readily as they will European cinema or documentaries about African dictators. Moreover, Criterion does not flinch from controversial films because they believe controversial themes. Thanks to this company, we can readily net capable versions of Paul Morrissey’s “Flesh for Frankenstein” and “Blood for Dracula” along with the ultra violent “Robocop.” I have yet to fully eye the depths of Criterion’s film catalog, but their other discs must surely be as though-provoking as the titles I have viewed so far. Criterion finally released one of my approved foreign films, the independent runt gem entitled “C’est Advance Pres de Chez Vous,” oddly translated as “Man Bites Dog.” Made in Belgium a microscopic over a decade ago, this bright movie viciously satirizes the media and its admire for dramatic violence. Criterion not only presents this movie with a heap of extras, they also restored the film to its uncut originate. This is well-known because the version I watched nearly ten years ago was missing two scenes that are arguably the most ghastly parts in the entire film.

Filmed entirely in the style of a murky and white documentary, “Man Bites Dog” is an often unsuitable excursion into the underground world of a sadistic thug named Benoit, a travelogue of the daily activities and random thoughts of a bloodthirsty sociopath. Most of the time he robs the elderly of their pensions, commits burglaries, drinks himself amusing, or kills innocent people for no other reason than that he feels like it. In several scenes we explore Ben instructing the film crew on how to weigh down bodies so they will not float when he dumps the corpses into an abandoned rock quarry. His associates are mostly a rather seedy lot: he often visits an aging woman of questionable virtue and hangs out with an heinous boxer. Qualified former Benny is not above suddenly killing a pal in a fit of rage, or giving an weak woman a fatal heart attack by screaming at the top of his lungs into her face. This guy is a part of work, but what truly makes the film painful to gape is how Benoit gradually lures the filmmakers into sharing his repulsive crimes.

In a map, and this is the accurate genius of “Man Bites Dog,” the viewer can sometimes understand why the documentarians become alive to in Benoit’s shenanigans. Even as he commits the most harmful of crimes, this hooligan is truly a charming character with many endearing traits. He often waxes philosophic about such disparate topics as architecture and poetry, has a lady friend who takes him to art galleries, and his generosity to the filmmakers chronicling his life knows no bounds. Benny is always willing to remove a drink or pitch in to abet pay for more film because he enjoys the company of his newfound buddies. Watching this guy play with children in the street even though he committed an unpleasant crime against a youth in another scene presents the documentarians, and by extension the viewer, with a legal scrape not easily resolved. Benoit does not recount what Hannah Arendt referred to as the “banality of rotten” but rather an “ambiguity of faulty,” and it makes pigeonholing this character at times extremely problematic. To gain it even more difficult for the viewer to despise Benoit, his likeable mother and grandfather appear from time to time. But detest him you will, especially after seeing the aftermath of a robbery in the suburbs and an encounter with a couple in an apartment after an all-night drunk. “Man Bites Dog” is a animated film.

Even worse, this movie is often quite amusing in the blueprint only the blackest of comedies can do. Benoit’s overdramatic French dialogue is a sob, and many of his views on life are objective downright hysterical. You cannot abet but laugh when Benoit forces the camera crew to rebury bodies that have suddenly reappeared when the quarry goes dry. I assume one of the funniest scenes in the movie occurs when a member of the documentary crew dies as a result of Benoit’s activities and we peek a member of the crew eulogize him on camera. When another filmmaker dies later in the film, this same guy performs another eulogy nearly indistinguishable from the first one. I have never felt as guilty about laughing during a film as I have with this one because I knew I fair should not, could not, dared not glean this humorous, but in the demolish I unprejudiced could not wait on myself from giggling over Ben’s antics.

The extras on the Criterion disc are not all that impressive. There is a film short starring the actor who played Benoit that is not that splendid, an interview with the filmmakers that is rather short and does not screech mighty about the film, a collected gallery, and some reviews concerning the movie. The transfer quality of the narrate is honorable, though, as are the subtitles for this French language film. As far as I know, we have never seen anything further from the people responsible for “Man Bites Dog.” Perhaps these guys were one hit wonders, and if so that is a darn shame. This movie is so brilliantly conceived and executed that it is difficult to imagine that whoever made it would meander into obscurity.

MBD will undoubtedly receive its equal portion of lovers and loathers…this is a very hard film to discover due to its extremity of the violence. Though its grunt is grisly to say the least, the overall execute is a startlingly satirical peer at the media’s fascination at peering from the safety of our collective couches at the levels of violence that hasten rampant in television.

An extremely tight budgeted camera crew follow a poetry spouting serial killer through the streets of Belgium in a quasi-documentary. Adhering initially to the unofficial press “rule” of not interfereing with the outcome of events, they hold the horrific details of Benoit’s bloodlust, which can only be equalled with the evident psychosis in his mind as He swings from controlled to chaotic. What gives MBD that extra degree of cinematic edge is the interviews with the crew and cast (all of which coincindently exercise their sincere names in the movie, adding a greater sense of realism) …where they argue about costs, running out of equipment and film, again spurring on the documentary feel on a fictional film. When the line is crossed by the crew from neutral observers to participants, they follow the same overall repercussions as our diabolical hero.

Based on Criterion’s history of giving resplendent transfers, I will be optimistic that MBD will recieve the similar royal treatment. Since the airing of the pilot, both critics and audiences have been blown away by My Name is Earl. If you’ve read the last 14 reviews, you already know the premise and legend of the prove. Anyone who has strived for spiritual improvement can readily identify with Earl. There are some aspects of that path that are easy and immediately rewarding, but that’s not always fair. Sometimes you have to suffer the misunderstanding, mocking or rejection of your friends and/or relatives or difficult, unforgiving souls. Later epsiodes have their difficult moments and Earl has to enjoy tight to his faith to fetch through it. The most considerable of such situations is in the episode “Number One”, when Earl gives all his money to the man who was supposed to glean it. He ends up losing everything except his faith, hungry and homeless, but is finally restored. Lynard Skynard’s “Simple Man” was the perfect music for that scene.

I am very elated to study this display achieve on DVD because NBC edited bits and pieces out when they reran the episodes to originate more time for commercials. Some of those bits are considerable to comedic timing and storyline shuffle. I highly recommend you pick up this collection and try to idea the episodes through its spiritual prism.

Wow. What a tall DVD.

The one hour documentary featuring interviews with some of the cast, Robert Wise, Harold Prince, Sondheim, and some key crew members is completely spellbinding. Home movie footage showing the filming of the movie is included. Examples of the techniques that the movie makers former to film a musical are appealing. I was amazed that the knife scene, for example, is COMPLETELY counted out and the actor/dancers’ movements were choreographed down to the second (breath, two, three, four; stab, two three; search for, two, three, four) . Fabulous! Rita Morena is particularly informative regarding the dubbing of her song “A Boy Like That”. The Robbins/Wise codirecting of the film is explained. And some of Natalie Wood’s current vocals are included. The documentary is invaluable for fans of the film.

As for the film itself, it looks and sounds amazing on my widescreen HDTV. The anamorphic transfer is very qualified.

The wonderful music, the vibrant colors, the qualified voice-overs, and of course, the memoir. A young girl is told by her Grandfather the myth about the wooden nutcracker he gave her as a gift. A boy soldier was turned into wood by the nasty Mousequeen, and to become a trusty boy again, he must defeat the Mouseking.

With the voices of Phyllis Diller, Kiefer Sutherland, Peter O’Toole, and Megan Follows, you unprejudiced can’t go foul with this cast. An estimable treat, meant to be watched every year!

When I was eleven, I remember watching this version of “The Nutcracker” when it first came out on video, and I fell completely in fancy with it. I agree with the other reviewers about the not so top notch animation ; however the tale line was attractive. It is a bit different when comparing it to Tchaikovsky’s ballet. This portrayal of the Christmas classic comes terminate to E.T.A. Hoffman’s book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” (If you appreciate the “Nutcracker” you should go read it. The best translation is by Ralph Manheim and illustrator by Maurice Sendak. Go check it out!!!) You have the leading character, Clara (Megan Fellows “Anne of Green Gables”), an adolescent girl who wants to possess on to her childhood. Nutcracker (Keiffer Sutherland), a young prince of the toys, who is cursed to live his life as a nutcracker. Uncle Drosselmier (I have no view who play’s this character) who is the instigator of Clara’s and Nutcrackers meeting. Also, a handful of incandescent supporting characters (the mouse queen played by Phylis Diller) that makes the tale a delight to gawk. Through out the fable they have dance scenes and dilapidated Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” music as background music. What I mostly enjoyed in the movie is Clara’s struggle to figure out what her upright dreams are and whether to live in a fantasy world or face adulthood. The ending also leaves us questioning if Clara’s adventures with her Nutcracker Prince was a dream or reality. Older children (as well as adults) will devour this movie. What I mean by older children (8 yrs and up) is that there is a bit of fighting and death scenes. Other than that, it’s a expansive movie to contemplate during the holidays!!!
